Hoppings have imported and processed softwoods for more
than 70 years. We recognize that our activities have an environmental
impact, both because of the material we handle, and from the
manufacturing and distributive parts of our operations. It is
our intention to continuously improve our environmental performance,
and ensure that best practices in forestry management are encouraged.
We shall source timber only from producers who can demonstrate
a commitment to environmental responsibility, using as our
basis the Timber Trades Federation's environmental timber
purchasing policy, and our accreditation with the Forest Stewardship
Council. We shall reduce wastage of materials and resources,
and encourage recycling wherever possible.
We shall
not only observe our statutory responsibilities, but shall
take account of guidelines issued by relevant professional
bodies, in order to be a responsible member of the community.
By the design of our operations and the development of emergency
policies we shall ensure the environmental effects of any
accidents at our premises will be minimized.
We shall
measure our performance on a regular basis, and monitor our
efforts by means of independent audit, using our existing
Quality Management System. We shall annually review the performance
of our Environmental Management System and incorporate improvements
into it as a result of our experiences and from professional
advice.
We shall
train our staff to have an understanding of environmental
issues and encourage them to tell management where further
improvements in our performance can be made.
The Board
of Directors will approve our environmental objectives and
targets for each year. When doing this they will also ensure
that resources are provided to allow this work to be completed.
The Company
Secretary will have overall responsibility for the maintenance
of the System, and will be responsible for disseminating information
to stakeholders, customers, suppliers and the general public.
We shall publish this policy in company publications and on
our websites, and will provide periodic updates on our environmental
performance.
